2007 is the 10th anniversary of the Iron Horse Trail. This urban walking and cycling path runs between the cities of Kitchener and Waterloo in Southern Ontario.

Before the Iron Horse Trail came to be, the corridor was a railway. Between the early 1900s and the 1950s, passengers traveled between towns on the Grand River Electric Lines, in a time of few cars.

Electric freight service ended in the 1960s, and diesel freight trains continued along the line until the 1990s. These trains shipped materials in and out of local factories until the plants began to use trucks, or simply shut down.

During my daily commutes along the trail from Kitchener to Waterloo, I wondered about other trail-users.

What stories could they share about the route's past and present? Has the Iron Horse Trail wound its way through their personal histories, the way it has mine?
